I remember hearing the old idea about changing names, which was bad because any scammer could go switch his name right after and poof he's basically disappeared from radar so to speak.

Well, here is my proposed answer to it. Make it so you can change your character's name once but ONLY if you switch it with a character name already on your account.

Example. A guy wants his warrior's name El Diablo on his monk who is now named Godly Char. He would have to switch the names between them. He wouldn't be able to just use a new name, and they could restrict it so you can only get the name switched on your character once or something.

That would be able to prevent scamming, because your not just creating an entirely new name to switch it to. You would just be switching the names that are already linked to your account, between 2 characters.

Well if you did that you could just create a new character with the name you want for an existing character, swap the names, then deleted the newly made character

. I do like the idea though, nice little loop-hole to get what we want.

To add on to the exploitation:
-The person switches character names then deletes the other character (as mentioned above)
-If that person scammed the other person into giving him/her thier account password then they enter in the victim's account and creates a character with their old character's name.
Thus making the victim scammed and banned. Ouch :P

Wouldn't a simply solution be that you can have a display name that everyone sees but your characters name on the account will always be what you named them? For example:

Name on account = I'm so l33t
Name everyone else will see = Conan the Cimmerian

Yes this is the way they should do it, so if you have a name added on your friends list it will come up like it always does if someone changes characters.

Also the original name will still be tagged to the account and not released back in to use.

Instead of switching just a delay would be nice. For example your name doesn't change until you next download an update etc

Or for a day or two you could have A.K.A. (or formerly known as) X X in your title show off area.

that would make thigns easyier, you see i ahve a character named awaki chimp, but with my recent additions to the awaki family it doesn't much work. becuase if i'm playing with awaki of teh arrow, everyone knows what that character is, a ranger obviously. but if i told you awaki chimp i doubt your going to say, oh... he must be an elementalist. so maybe a year ago i would want to but recently i couldn't change awaki chimp into something like awaki fo the magics. theres an attachment there. but whatever if you want to change your character's name, but i couldn't

You realize that the Friend List keeps up with all the changes that your Friend's account make? I fail to see how allowing 'Name Changes' would make you disappearing under the Radar.

Say you add 'I Like Pie' on your Friend List. Now 'I Like Pie's' account is under your Friend List monitor and all changes that 'I Like Pie' does will show results on your Friend List. For example, 'I Like Pie' decides to delete 'I Like Pie' and makes 'I Hate Pie'. Your Friend List now shows that change by showing 'I Like Pie (I Hate Pie)'. This would be same as changing names.

its never going to happen...but i would love to switch my monk (With Love For You) with my pvp assassin's name (Purple Pony Lover) =D

+ many more....spamming it in pvp gets boring after a while, especially when people start recognizing me after i stay in RA too long in one sitting..... =/

or since they have the gw store now....just add a price to do it, i wouldn't mind paying $5 to change my monks name to my pvp assassins like i said. discourage people from scamming, though if they were scamming someone of like a million gold or something then anet would have to have a way to not pin it on someone else even if the name gets changed (keep character name history or something).

This is pretty much the only way it would even be possible. It's exactly what they do when people use "inappropriate" names and they make them change it. Anet has said it is impossible to actually change the name completely.

Well, I know that people can create new character and switch names then delete said character. But what is stopping them from creating a character, scamming someone and then just deleting it after moving items and create a new one?

The scam still works without this, but it'd still be an easier way to get what we want was the only thing I could think of.

I do like the idea of having the name shown to people be different then character logged to account.

Not gonna happen. The data base is setup so that it recognizes the original characters name. If you change the name the database will now start giving you fits over the armor that is now not yours. All of the weapons that you customized for your character will nto be usable owith the new name either. Major headache in implementing this one. Will take too much time to code into the game, not to mention the complaints that A-Net and NC-Soft will get when players have to buy armor and find the uber weapons all over.
